5 Easy Ways to Increase Your Fiber Intake

Posted by Stacie | June 9, 2007 .

As adults, we need to eat 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day. This number might seem overwhelming at first, but fiber really helps keep you feeling fuller, longer, and is essential for a healthy diet.

Here are five easy ways to increase your fiber intake:

  1. Choose whole grain breads for breakfast and lunch instead of white bread. Examples include: Thomas Lite English muffins and whole wheat toast.
  2. Add high fiber cereal to your normal cereal (or just change your cereal!). Examples include: Kashi Go Lean, All Bran, Fiber One
  3. Eat fresh fruit instead of canned fruit
  4. Buy and prepare brown rice instead of white rice.
  5. When a recipe calls for flour, substitute ½ of the flour for whole wheat flour. For instance, if it calls for 1 cup of flour, use ½ cup whole wheat flour and ½ cup white flour.

There are quite a few other ways to “sneak” fiber into your diet, but do what works best for you.
