Wow, what a great post. I've never really thought about budgeting healthy eating (as opposed to just budgeting eating). Definitely something to think about as I work on my weight and finances.

We are a family of 5/6 (mom, dad, 12 y.o., 3, 2 and a 12 y.o. stepdaughter every other weekend) I think these numbers are quite high....if you shop sales you definitely can get by eating well on the "thrifty" budget or lower. I don't spend more than $600/mo on food.....there's no way.

My wife and I (plus 6 month old) run about $250$ a month on groceries. We dont eat out much at all.

We make all our own baby food (puree sweet potato/squash/apples/yaddayadda).

Our problem is, we are tryring to cut that down to about $200!

Baby formula is our biggest expense probably ($14 a can, one for us plus one for the sitter).

Those plans seem like.. expensive plans..what kind of 'liberal' food diet has a single person spending 70$ a week. Is that living on caviar and emerald peas.

My husband and I budget $250 per month for food for the both of us. We usually spend less than that and we eat very healthy. We have some expensive tastes (organic milk & veggies & starbucks coffee) but we offset those more expensive items with cheap staples.

We eat steel cut oats for breakfast every morning (55 cents a pound). We figure it costs us about 5 cents per bowl (however our organic lattes we make at home each morning cost us 50 cents each). We also eat a lot of beans and brown rice (you can't beat 99 cents a pound for beans). We also eat a lot of nut instead of meat. Big bags of walnuts aren't that expensive at Sam's club, and they can round out any meal from breakfast (on oatmeal) to dinner (sprinkled on salad).

We are very active adults, running & hiking so we consume more calories than many people, but since most of our calories come from healthy sources we spend less per calorie.

I believe eating healthfully is cheaper than eating unhealthfully. I can buy a bag of organic apples for the same price as a bag of chips. The organic apples last longer than chips and they're more nutritious & fill us up longer so we are less likely to eat more at the next meal.
